Ohio State Parks are open year-round, and offer a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities in winter. Try one of our popular guided winter hikes, or strike out on your own.

Weather permitting, cross-country skiing is allowed on multiple use trails at 25 parks, and in virtually any wide-open space blanketed with snow.

Forty-one parks have sledding hills.

Snowmobiling is allowed on more than 93 miles of designated trails at 10 parks, as well as on the frozen surface of Buckeye Lake, Grand Lake St. Marys, Indian Lake, Lake Loramine and Portage Lakes.

Ice skating, ice boating and ice fishing are allowed on most state park lakes, weather permitting.  A minimum of five inches of ice is recommended for any activity on a frozen lake.

Winter camping is a great escape for the hardy, and a lodge or cottage getaway is a cozy alternative for those who prefer the great indoors after a day of winter play.

What You Should Know

Be on the lookout for open or thin ice.  Natural springs can create unstable ice conditions.  Pockets of air may occur under the ice in lakes that are subject to winter draw down.

Cross-country skiing or snowmobiling on trails, roads or other designated land is allowed only if the ground is completely frozen and there is sufficient snow or ice, as determined by the Division of Parks and Recreation.

Designated areas will be posted by the park as being "open" or "closed" to skiing or snowmobiling.Dress in layers and wear warm, sturdy, waterproof footwear for outdoor winter fun.

Be aware of the warning signs of hypothermia.
